Engineering From Molecules

In the BESG we are interested in understanding biological and environmental systems at the subcellular (e.g. genes, proteins and metabolic reactions), cellular (e.g. cell growth, kinetics, aggregation and biofilm formation) and systems (e.g. metabolic modelling and bioremediation) level.

The underlining philosophy of our research is to apply system biology techniques to biochemical, biomedical and environmental engineering problems for process and product improvements in areas ranging from pharmaceuticals and biofuels through to the clean-up of gaseous, liquid and solid wastes.

The BESG has a broad base of experience in bio-chemical engineering, environmental engineering, microbiology and chemistry. For more information on our research activities, please visit our Research Area.

We have fully equiped laboratories with state-of-the-art instruments and high performance equipment. One of our laboratories has just recently been commissioned (September 2003) and is the first Systems Biology Laboratory within the Department of Chemical Engineering. For more information on our laboratories and instruments, please visit our Facilities pages.

Jude Bradbury – The Dranfield School

Jude is an A' Level student from the Dranfield School, just outskirt of the Sheffield city centre. She visited and experienced how's it like being a researcher in the Systems Biology Lab last September. For the period of 2 weeks, she learned Proteins, RNA and DNA extractions; 1D, 2D and agarose gel electrophoresis; some fermentation skills; and finally a very compact and informative report.

According to Jude: "Working in the lab has been an amazing experience. It gave me the opportunity to put all the A' Level theory I had learned into practice. The PhD students are great to work with, as not only are they extremely helpful but they are all experts in their field. Consequently, I have learned vast quantities of skills and knowledge in a very small space of time. If you are interested in research and have an enormous amount of patience I strongly recommend the lab for your research experience. "
